SAFLog was started as a subsidiary of SAFreight Limited (SAFreight) in 2000 before changing hands in 2002-3. SAFreight was a Black Economic Empowerment freight and marine industrial company that was formed in 1998 as a result of the efforts of the National Empowerment Trust (NET) of South Africa, with Compagnie Belge d’Affretements N.V. (Cobelfret), Belgium’s largest privately owned freight company at the time, as a major shareholder in SAFreight Limited. Some key SAFreight’s subsidiaries included SAFBuild, a tug and fishing vessel building company which successfully completed five Voith Propulsion tugs for the National Ports Authority for the Durban and Richards Bay harbours, SAFDredge and SAFCable, among others. SAFLog is a 100% black-owned company with a Level One BBBEE certification. The majority beneficial shareholder in SAFLog is the CEO, Thami Gwala.
