SWASAP

Swasap has been part of South Africa’s railway manufacturing industry for more than 70 years, building a strong reputation around one of the most critical components in any train:
the axle. Based in Germiston, the company manufactures and supplies railway axles for locomotives, passenger coaches and freight wagons, serving railway administrations, rolling stock builders and refurbishment workshops in South Africa and international markets. Railway axle manufacturing is firmly at the centre of Swasap’s business. Its capabilities include forging, heat treatment, CNC machining, grinding, cold rolling and wheelset assembly, allowing the company to produce axles to customer specifications and a wide range of international railway standards. Its GFM forge is CNC-controlled and supported by specialist heat-treatment furnaces, while its manufacturing facility includes advanced machining, measuring and testing equipment.

Quality and testing are equally important to the company. Swasap monitors axles throughout the manufacturing process and operates a laboratory capable of chemical, metallographic and mechanical testing, as well as NDT of axles. Its systems are certified against recognised international railway and quality standards, including EN13261, IRIS, RISAS, AAR , RS/ME/SP/002, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO45001. With its combination of local manufacturing, specialised engineering and international experience, Swasap continues to play a role in strengthening the railway supply chain.
