Bernard has served in various executive leadership roles in Alstom. As Managing Director for Alstom Southern Africa Cluster, he provides leadership oversight to the four joint ventures in South Africa as follows:
- Gibela, a consortium responsible for the delivery of PRASA’s new rolling stock programme – 600 X’trapolis Mega trains. Gibela is the first largest and the most advanced centre for train manufacturing in Africa.
- Bombela Maintenance is a special purpose company created for Gautrain Maintenance. The Gautrain is a world class rapid rail network in Gauteng.
- Alstom (BTSA) is currently manufacturing electric locomotives (eTRAXX) for Transnet Freight Rail.
- The Alstom Ubunye factory manufactures mechanical and electrical components for rolling stock.
Prior to leading the Southern Africa cluster, Bernard managed several Alstom sites in different countries such as United States, South Korea, China, Russia, France, and Kazakhstan.
His career in the railway industry spans more than 30 years with expertise in industrial site development, management of rolling stock, designing, and manufacturing regional trains; tramways; urban, regional, and very high-speed trains; service and project management.
